December 11, 2015, Union Tribune Press Release
Special district group holding student contest
By Karen Pearlman | 5:10 p.m. Dec. 11, 2015San Diego County — The San Diego Chapter of California Special Districts Association, which represents more than 40 Special Districts in the county, is holding its first video contest for county middle and high school students.
Prizes will be four cash awards of $1,500, with $750 going to the winning student and another $750 for the school the winning student attends.
The contest is an effort to provide educational outreach and awareness of special districts and their role in local government, according to Helix Water District Board member Kathleen Hedberg, San Diego Chapter past president and chairman of the contest.
The contest will give students an opportunity to create a one-minute Public Service Announcement about special districts, with the theme being “What’s So Special About Special Districts.”
Videos will be judged on creativity, originality, positivity, entertainment value, accuracy of information, value of information and production quality.
“This new public outreach program is a real win-win-win for students, teachers and for special districts in San Diego County,” Hedberg said. “Kids are gifted today with the use of technology and ability to create videos, and we want to tap into that creativity to help us explain special districts.”
The California Special Districts Association was formed in 1969 to promote good governance for independent special districts. Special districts are independent public agencies that deliver core local services to communities.
The San Diego Chapter currently has 44 active members, including water districts, fire districts, wastewater districts, healthcare districts and cemetery districts.
Information about special districts in California can be found at csda.net. Application information can be found online at sandiegocsda.weebly.com.
Videos are due by March 1, 2016.
